large traditional style home with orangery

What is the difference between an orangery and a conservatory?

Traditionally speaking, a conservatory is a structure made mostly of glass. They usually have a pitched roof and can come in a range of shapes, including P-shaped. Orangeries, by contrast, have less glass than a conservatory. They’re usually a solid brick structure featuring large windows and a flat roof with a glass lantern. In essence, an orangery is designed to blend the best features of a conservatory and a permanent extension.

Originating in 17th century Europe, they were originally designed as spaces to grow oranges and other citrus fruits. Nowadays, they’re ideal for kitchens, studies, social spaces, and especially garden gateways. In fact, our orangeries can be installed with a set of French, patio or bifold doors. As with all our conservatories, the design is fully customisable to suit the exact needs of your property.

    Lantern roof orangeries

A lantern roof gives orangeries the natural light and stunning views of a glass roof, alongside the noise and thermal insulation benefits of a solid roof. As with our windows, we only install glass with the highest quality glazing. Thanks to their incredibly low U-values, a lantern roof will ensure that your orangery maintains a perfect temperature all the year round.

They also exhibit exceptional strength and durability. We work hard to ensure that your lantern roof is completely leakproof and able to withstand even the most extreme weather. This makes them optimal for homes in coastal areas like Bournemouth, Torquay and Minehead. You can watch the clouds drift through the day, the stars through the night, all from the comfort of your new orangery.
