What is the difference between Victorian and Edwardian conservatories?

We’ve spent decades supplying South West homeowners with beautiful conservatories, and this is something we’re often asked. Edwardian conservatories were the prevalent style during the reign of King Edward VII, between 1901 and 1910. This followed the reign of Queen Victoria. Edwardian conservatories are known for their sloping roofs and flat fronts.

Victorian conservatories, however, have much steeper roofs and also curved bow window fronts. With less lavish roof and ridge decoration, an Edwardian conservatory is a refined and elegant extension that maintains the vintage feel of the Victorian conservatory. Thanks to its neat, rectangular shape, it’s also great for hanging up shelves or paintings.

Both are renowned for letting a huge amount of natural sunlight into the home. If you live in a spacious rural setting, like the beautiful Devon countryside, or the Cornish coast, then both types of conservatory would make a wonderful addition to your home.

    uPVC and aluminium Edwardian conservatories

It’s been over a hundred years since Edward’s brief reign, yet Edwardian conservatories are still as popular as ever. Thanks to modern developments in uPVC and aluminium, homeowners can enjoy these conservatories’ vintage aesthetics without undergoing all the old-fashioned maintenance. Both materials are completely immune to splitting, rotting and warping. All that’s required to keep them looking brand new is the occasional clean with soapy water.
